Private Challenges

Have more fun together with Private Challenges.

Birdwatching whilst out in nature is always rewarding, but there’s nothing better than shared adventures with people you care about to bring you together. Now you can team up and compete with your friends (near or far) using Private Challenges. You choose who, when and how you play.

What are Private Challenges?

Private Challenges are small, private competitions that allow you to choose your own rules in a challenge with your friends. Compete against each other to reach a target – either species or days wild – and then pick how long you’ve got. Feel the joy of competition and camaraderie as you battle back and forth on the leaderboard.

Here are a few examples of what that might look like to get you inspired:

  • Who can log 50 species or more this month?
  • Who can spend the most days wild (by logging a sighting or session) this year?
  • Can you log 10 species by the end of the day?

How to get started

Open the Birda app on your phone and head to the Challenges tab. Then tap the blue + button at the top and we’ll walk you through the steps to decide when your challenge should take place, what your goal should be, and who you want to invite. Then all you need to do is head out birdwatching!

You can choose from two different goal types:

  • Species – each different bird species that you log will count towards the goal. E.g if you set the goal as 10 species then you’ll need to log 10 different birds within the timeframe. You can decide if you want to restrict it to tickable species or not.
  • Days Wild – every day you go out birding and log a sighting or record a session on the Birda app, it’ll count as a day wild. You can easily turn this into a streak by picking the timeframe and setting the goal as the same number of days wild. E.g. If you set the start date as 1st Jan and the end date as 7th Jan and the goal is 7 days wild then you’ll effectively need a 7-day streak to complete the goal.
