Overview
Like many of you, we believe that more people should be encouraged to appreciate nature and spend more time outdoors birdwatching! BirdLife South Africa have launched an ambitious project to produce a list of bird names in all 12 South African languages to do just this. In celebration of Heritage month in South Africa, BirdLife SA challenges you to head out into nature (wherever you are in the world) and support the South African Names for South African Birds (SANSAB) project by seeing if you can spot 12 bird species this September.
Most young speakers of many of the 12 South African languages don’t know the names of birds in their own language as no specific name for many species exists. BirdLife South Africa wants to change this by working closely with birders that traditionally speak these languages to come up with species names that reflect not only the language, but the culture of the people who speak these languages at home (first language).
Help create a future where all South African children have mother tongue names for the broad variety of birdlife that the country has to offer.
As Nelson Mandela said “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”
