Garden Bird Bingo – UK Edition

Bingo or “Beano” as it was originally called in the United States, is a hugely popular numbers game that dates back to the mid-1500’s. It started in Italy as the Italian Lottery or “Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia”, where players had cards with numbers in rows, winning numbers were drawn from a sack and players competed to match their numbers first. The game became so popular in Italy that it crossed borders to France in the late-1700’s where it was known as “Le Lotto”. The French altered the game slightly and modified the cards into the standard 3 horizontal rows and 9 vertical rows that make up a traditional 90-Ball bingo card that is still used now.
Today, Bingo is one of the most popular games in the world with millions of players, playing both online and in Bingo halls. It’s fun, easy to play and brings people together. It also forms the basis of lots of educational games for kids, as well as family games. At Chirp, we have created our very own “Garden Bird Bingo” that you can play at home or to add another dimension to your next nature walk!

Our first release is the UK edition, we are busy working on more versions so please let us know if you’d like one for your area. We’ve designed five printable game cards, each with nine different bird species which are commonly seen in gardens across the UK. Each player chooses a different card and then you can decide which game you want to play, or make up your own! Here are some of our suggestions:

Game 1 – First to cross off all the birds on their card wins.

Game 2 – First to see 3 birds in a row (horizontal, vertical or diagonal) wins.

Game 3 – Set a time limit and see who can cross off the most birds.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a printer, you can make your own game card by writing out the names of the birds in a grid and then use the pictures on your screen to help with identification.
You can attach the cards to a clipboard to make it easier to fill in the cards whilst you are on the go. If you laminate them or put them inside a plastic sleeve and use a wipe-off marker, then your cards become reusable and more environmentally friendly.
Since COVID-19 entered our world, we are all having to spend more time at home, or, if we are lucky enough, out enjoying the sights and sounds of nature on a daily walk. Garden Bird Bingo is a great way to use this time to reconnect with nature and learn more about the feathered friends that we see around us every day. We hope you have fun!
